Lymphedema: An Overview

When the lymphatic system is disturbed it can no longer take up sufficient lymph fluid. The fluid accumulates in the tissues. The result: a visible and palpable swelling. Doctors call this lymphedema.

  • Disturbances of the lymphatic system can be primary (congenital, praecox or tarda) or secondary (operations such as due to cancer, radio therapy, infections, or injury).
  • Lymphedema can occur locally or over the whole body (generalized lymphedema)
  • Lymphedema is a chronic disorder.

Lymphedema is a notoriously debilitating progressive condition with no known cure. The unfortunate patient faces a lifelong struggle of medical, and sometimes surgical, treatment fraught with potentially lethal complications. Lymphedema refers to swelling that occurs most often in your arms and legs. It can also affect other areas of the body. It may affect just one arm or leg, but sometimes lymphedema can involve both arms and legs.

The swelling occurs when a blockage in your lymphatic system prevents the lymph fluid in your arm or leg from draining adequately. As the fluid accumulates, the welling continues. Controlling lymphedema involves diligent care of your affected limb. Most patients will require Complex Physical Decongestion Therapy (CPDT) to start decongestion of the limb. Compression garments are designed to maintain the best possible decongestion results achieved by manual lymphatic drainage.
